Building Confidence & Resilience

Last year, after school, I was bummed out because of my Mathematics exam results. I told the staff that I had failed my exams and they gave me a lot of encouragement by sharing about their own challenges they faced in school. I am thankful that they shared with me and encouraged me as it really motivated me to focus and study better for my examinations.

I’ve learnt a lot from the mentors here. One of those lessons is learning to accept someone for who they really are. It really helped me accept myself for who I really am and make me interact more with people. When I was younger, I was really shy and had very little friends. I had very little confidence and would stammer a lot when I am presenting in front of the class. I also learnt teamwork from some of the monthly special programmes, contributing to society and working with people of different personalities and backgrounds. I enjoy the activities like playing board games and card games such as Munchkin and Fluxx, playing the PS4, and cooking through the culinary programme. The Youth Hub has changed me a lot. I have become a better person and would always volunteer whenever I am free. When I volunteer, it really makes me feel satisfied with myself as I have helped as best as I can. Thank you, New Life, for mentoring me, listening to me, allowing me to share my problems, and letting me experience new things with all of you.

From a Suicidal Gangster to a Hopeful Dreamer

I joined a gang when I was 18. Life became meaningless when my then-girlfriend broke up with me during a time of financial difficulty in my family. I got addicted to online gaming, inflicted self-harm and became suicidal. I also missed school for two years. I was then referred to a New Life social worker for counselling. He encouraged me and brought me out of my hopelessness. Today I’m pursuing my studies in Community Care & Social Services at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE).  I now aspire to help youths who were like me before.

Nurturing and Caring for Preparation to Primary School

Since I enrolled my children in New Life Childcare, I observed that they are progressing very well and have picked up the necessary skills to prepare them for primary school. They always tell me they like their K2 teachers a lot for they are caring and loving. The facilities in the centre are well maintained, clean and safe. I’m glad I’m able to focus on my work knowing that my children are in safe and nurturing hands of New Life.

Sharul

My son Sharul used to lack confidence, throwing tantrums and was doing poorly in school. After six months of supervision from caring mentors in New Life Children & Student Care, he’s now happier, more confident and he even improved in his exams!

Many thanks for your dedication and effort in training my daughters for their year-end performances. Rachel was elated when she was given a line in the musical. She had practised very hard, roping me in to take on different roles as she narrated the whole musical. My husband and I loved the superbly planned musical. It was very heartening for me to see Melody performing her best in front of a big audience. She is naturally reserved but was confident on stage and that could only be due to her teachers’ encouragement and patience with her throughout the year. Both my girls love school and always shares joyfully about the many interesting things they have done, learnt or discovered at school -for instance, when the caterpillar that Rachel’s class had kept turned into a cocoon and then a butterfly! Thank you for the many opportunities you provided them to gain confidence in both speaking and reading. Rachel is now able to converse, sing and recall in Mandarin and has grown to be more responsible due to her teachers’ mentoring.

I like the teachers and I’ve made many friends at the centre. During the school holidays, we get to play games and engage in other a=ctivities such as art and craft. There are special lessons conducted by the teachers that I enjoy too.
Besides these, I also participated in P.A.N.D.A Champs during the December school holidays. In this programme, I was introduced to different character values like showing acts of love and accepting differences. One of the lessons that I learnt from accepting differences is empathy, which is to step into the shoes of others. Through the different station games where we had to colour a picture while blindfolded, button shirts without using our hands and communicate without speech, I got to experience the difficulties that persons with disabilities faced. It makes me sad for those who are blind as they might trip or get hit by a car while crossing the road.
